Inquiry: Things to Know
One of the more useful features of Inquiry is the ability to follow a link from one inquiry into an already customized inquiry. This allows for inquiries to be already formatted when you go to view them, or to have conditions already set so that the data can be further refined. As an example, we will look at showing what "Work in Progress" (WIP) was cleared out in a particular Client Invoice, a tool that can be of particular use when trying to find out where a specific expense item was billed out to the client.
The first thing we are going to do is create a custom Transaction Inquiry that will be pre-formatted when we follow a link to it.
- Click on the Inquiry Menu, Select Transaction, and then select Transaction-All.
- Right click on the "Phase ID and Description" Column Header and select Group Expanded.
- Right click on the "Activity Type" Column Header and select Group Expanded. Click here to see image.
- Click on "Save As".
- Type a name of your choice in the "Custom Inquiry Name" field and click OK. We suggest calling it Formatted Transactions.
Now we are going to build a link to our formatted Inquiry.
- Click on the Inquiry Menu, Select Client, and then select Client Invoice.
- Right Click on a Column Header and select "Add Column to the Right".
- In the Column Dialog Box select "Link - Transaction".
- Click on the "Link" tab.
- On the Dialogue box in the line Link Column on 'Client Invoice to' select "Formatted Transactions". If you named the previously created transaction something else, please select that inquiry instead. Click here to see image.
- Click the OK button.
Now that you have the Link Column, you can click on the "Transaction" Link for any of your invoices, and you will be able to see a formatted list of all the WIP that was billed out on that particular invoice.
